Why is Aluminized Steel So Popular?
Here at Atlas Steel, we’ve been providing the Midwest and beyond with world-class aluminized steel for decades. As an employee-owned business, we understand the importance of quality steel in both a finished product and throughout every stage of development. When working on a project, you want to know that the material you’re using is high quality. The quality of a material will not only impact the final product, but also the quality of all the other systems and materials that rely on it. A car, for instance, can entirely fail if just one component is poor quality.
That said, you may be wondering: what exactly makes quality aluminized steel? And why is aluminized steel so popular? In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing why aluminized steel is essential for manufacturing.
What is Aluminized Steel?
Essentially, aluminized steel is a metallic alloy created by dipping steel into molten aluminum. The result is an alloy with all the strength of steel but the corrosion-resistant properties of aluminum. Though, the benefits don’t stop there.
Aluminized steel also outcompetes standard steel in its ability to transfer heat much more effectively than regular steel. As a result, aluminized steel is perfect for ovens, ranges, and cookware. On top of that, aluminized steel can reflect a massive 80% of infrared radiation and 90% of visible light, making it perfect for products such as mirrors.
Why Aluminized Steel is So Popular
For all the reasons listed above (and many more), aluminized steel is a widely popular material to use in manufacturing. However, there’s one more essential benefit to keep in mind: price.
Despite its many benefits, aluminized steel is surprisingly affordable to create. Aluminized steels are famously much cheaper to create than stainless steels even though they share many of the same qualities that make them perfect for manufacturing. This is a result of the fact that aluminized steel uses a thin coating, where stainless steel is an entirely new material. The bulk of any aluminized steel product will be standard carbon steel, but it will be protected from corrosion all the same due that thin coating’s effectiveness.
All in all, the aluminum alloy that coats aluminized steel is only a fraction of the total material’s makeup, meaning that aluminized steel isn’t much more expensive than carbon steel itself. Generally speaking, most of the cost comes from the actual hot-dipping process.
