Exploring the Process of Aluminizing Steel

Aluminized steel is one of the most widely sought after materials on the market. Sturdy, reliable, and heat-resistant, aluminized steel is perfect for a wide range of applications. In fact, whether or not you’re aware of it, aluminized steel is an essential component of the many utilities you rely on every day.

That said, aluminized steel hasn’t been around forever. In fact, it’s only really been commercially available since the 1950’s. In this month’s blog post, we’re discussing the two types of aluminized steel, how they’re made, and where you’ll find them.

Type 1 Aluminized Steel

Type 1 aluminized steel is the more commonly used type of aluminized steel, and it’s not hard to see why. Type 1 aluminized steel is hot-dip coated with a think aluminum alloy, which contains approximately 5-11% silicon. The presence of silicon makes the aluminum much more adherent, causing it to stick to the steel in the long-term. Even with just this thin coat of aluminum-silicon alloy, type 1 aluminized steel can withstand degrees of 550° C.

Applications for Type 1 Aluminized Steel: cooking products (baking sheets, ovens, ranges), fireplaces, water heaters, mufflers.

Type 2 Aluminized Steel

Where type 1 aluminized steel is made for more everyday applications, type 2 aluminized steel is generally more specialized. In particular, type 2 aluminized steel is created for an increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

Type 2 aluminized steel is coated in a much thicker layer of aluminum, which makes it ideal as a corrosion resistant steel. Unlike type 1, this aluminum is commercially pure, meaning both the thickness and the composition of the aluminum provide enhanced corrosion resistance. At the same time, however, type 2 aluminized steel remains easy to bend, coil, roll, or corrugate, making it a strong candidate for a wide variety of applications.

Applications for Type 2 Aluminized Steel: Corrugated roofing and siding, drainage improvements, bridge replacement, air conditioner housings.
